Xen questions...
Nov 13 2008, 4:58 PM EST
Hey guys,
I've got a buddy that is in bit of a pickle.
Here are the main questions...
1. Xen VDI uses SSH session ti fire up virtual desktops...true or false?
2. Xen supports MPIO...true or false?
3. Xen supports Jumbo frames..true or false?
4. Xen with EQL requires that snaps be done from Xen CLI and not from EQL group manager...true or false?

Here's the background...
* he's already sold a full setup for Xen with EQL
* customer is now running in to these issues
* Citrix and Dell engineers are already involved
* I'm creating this post for the sake of self education :-)

I asked one of our resident Xen experts in our Solution Engineering organization and these are the answers to your questions:

1.Xen VDI uses SSH session ti fire up virtual desktops...true or false?
Don’t know exactly what you mean by fire up, but yes the EQL storage adapter uses SSH to log into the PS arrays and pass-through the storage related commands such as create/delete volumes.

2. Xen supports MPIO...true or false?
Yes, XenServer supports MPIO using open-source dm-multipath software and where necessary vendor specific software such as RDAC (for Dell MD arrays)

3. Xen supports Jumbo frames..true or false?
False

4. Xen with EQL requires that snaps be done from Xen CLI and not from EQL group manager...true or false?
Since each volume of virtual machine hard disk is a volume on PS arrays, the snapshots can be triggered from EQL group manager. However it is highly recommended to use XenServer CLI to make sure snapshots get created for all VM volumes and if using the feature, quiesced snapshots can be created (which is not possible t’gh EQL group manager).

Thanks,
Todd
