Dell PE2950 - SAS 5E Card - LT2000 Connection Issue - Help Appreciated
Sep 8 2008, 12:43 AM EDT Hi All, I have 2 Dell PE2950 with ESX Server 3.5. Currently connected to an MD3000i. I just purchased a Powervault TL2000 (with 2 drives). It came with a SAS 5/E Card which I installed, then set up the TL2000 in the rack, plugged it in and turned it on. I noticed that the lights next to the SAS ports on the new card did not come on When I powered the 2950 back up. I then logged into the ESX server and did a 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' expecting it to show me a couple of new devices, but all that is listed is the usual'Perc 6/i', Virtual CD Rom, Virtual Floppy and then all the Luns from the 3000i. I then started up VM Infrastructure Client and went to - esx2 - configuration - storage adapters - rescan. It found a new device under LSI1068 - called VMHBA1 - in the description it says Type: Tape Now I'm stuck. My questions are: 1. Should I need to install any drivers etc on the ESX server before this is going to work (documentation I found said it is supported out of the box)? 2. Should I be concerned that there are no lights on next to the SAS port? I expect they will come on when it finds a valid working connection? 3. Do I need to do something else in VM Infrastructure Client to get my virtual machines to be able to see the backup device? Thanks in advance for any advice. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Dell PE2950 - SAS 5E Card - LT2000 Connection Issue - Help Appreciated
Sep 8 2008, 9:23 AM EDT Hello Acrobat, from my point of view you cannot use a direct attached SAS TL on an ESX (if its working I`m not sure about support from DELL and/or VMWARE), the only direct connected solution at this point comes with adaptec, adaptec is the only supported scsi device on an esx, to help you I´ll recommend to put the controller in a seperate backup server (useful if you also run virtual center on it), install a backup application on that backup server, use the consolidated backup scripts and crate a lun (needs NTFS, VMFS of VMWARE cannot be ready by many backup applications) on md 3000I (Sata drives are okay for that) and perform a backup to disk scenario and mount the lun to backup server and backup the data to tape (if you only want to backup the complete VM`s NT Backup reaches the spcification, with newset update its possible to clone vms without powering down the VM itself)), another idea is to implement agents on virtual machines and get the backup data (i.e. database / e-mail) to backup server via LAN, I totally agree that these options are producing lan traffic , but it works, the symantec software is sutiable for that , also commvault or entry solution of legato emc networker (new on market)can handle that. another idea, if you are not familar with consolidated backup scripts, is to use v-ranger from vizioncore, it comes with a GUI and easier to manage, definately worth to take a look on it. My recommendations are possible solutions there are also other backup solutions on the market , a good point to sart might be the consolidated backup guide http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_consolidated_backup.pdf also a good alternative might be http://www.vizioncore.com/vEssentials.html V-Ranger , but well, lets say its your opnion and choice, I also recommend an additional backupserver due to aovid extra costs if using V-MOTION Sry for english I`m not a native speaker , there is also good stuff on the vmware site Neph 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
