A rock and a hard place...

My customer and I need some guidance.
Our goals...
> migrate from Exhange 2003 to 2007
> the excahnge 07 setup will be running on server 2008
> this will require him to move from mixed to native mode on his server 2003 DC

Problem:
>moving to native on the DC will be an issue for his one remaining server running windows 2000
>the server running windows 2000 is acting as an IPX gateway for there glorious novel box

Question:
>can we run the IPX gateway in a MS VHD file on the DC and still move from mixed to native?
>if not...any other ideas?
