Jul 25 2008, 12:21 PM EDT Hey guys, My customer now has a bunch-o-blades deployed and has come up witht his question: We just recently installed a new M1000e chassis which has the latest CMC firmware (1.10). We have noticed that fans 7,8, and 9 run at 12000RPM even when the other fans are only at 4000RPM. We see this even when the all the blades in the system have been powered down. The ambient temperature is read as 19 degrees C. Our other M1000e chassis which is consuming more watts and has a previous version of the CMC firmware (1.01) does not exhibit this behavior. Any ideas? Is this expected? Is this a firmware issue? 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 25 2008, 4:23 PM EDT Here's screenshot taken right now from our chassis with 1.10 firmware and fully loaded with 14 x M605's and 2 x M600's at 23 degrees C ambient temp. Not anywhere close to the 12000RPM your customer is witnessing. Are the iDRACs on all the servers up to date as well ? Have you tried moving the fans around and see if this follows the fan or the slot the fan is in ? I would say not expected, check the things above and lets see if we can nail it down. 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 25 2008, 6:22 PM EDT I'm that customer... I have moved the fans around, whichever fan is in slots 7-9 run at 12k RPM. CMC: Hardware A01, Firmware 1.10 iDracs: Firmware 1.02 and 1.11 BIOS: 1.2.2 and 2.04 I will update the iDRACs and BIOS this weekend and see if that does anything. We do not have redundant power supplies (so just 3), could this be a factor? Also, I'm trying to monitor the fan speed via SNMP, however, I can not find in the MIB the fan speed, just whether the fan status is good or not. Thanks! 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 25 2008, 8:10 PM EDT Welcome to the site, we were beginning to think Brian just had imaginary friends :-) I'm not sure if the power supplies change any of the fan algorithms with respect to the number. I'll have to test on our chassis on Monday. I can also point the thermal engineers at this thread (the one's that write the fan code) and see if they have input. 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Jul 27 2008, 2:17 PM EDT I have updated the Firmware on the iDRACs (all 1.11) and BIOS (all 2.04) on the all servers in 2 of our enclosures, rebooted the CMC and still see the same thing. Our other two enclosures came preloaded with the most recent versions and it has always had fans 7-9 running fast. So the latest iDRAC firmware and server BIOS doesn't seem to be a solution. Example: Fan-1 4923 RPM Fan-2 4922 RPM Fan-3 4883 RPM Fan-4 4923 RPM Fan-5 4775 RPM Fan-6 4796 RPM Fan-7 12581 RPM Fan-8 12634 RPM Fan-9 12509 RPM Ambient_Temp 21C CMC reports health as all good and I can personally verify the fans are running fast and loud ;) 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Jul 28 2008, 11:30 AM EDT What IO modules do you have installed in the chassis ? Just found out fans 7,8 and 9 get their speed requests from the IO modules. Specifically there is a know issue with the PowerConnect 6220 modules that will be fixed in a firmware update for the switch, scheduled for Aug 26th release date. So I'm guessing you have these switches ? Can you confirm ? 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Sep 10 2008, 12:22 PM EDT We have upgraded our switches last week with 1.1.0.10 (9/3/08 release) firmware and the fans are running at the same speeds ~4900-5000 RPM. Thanks! 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Oct 22 2008, 11:23 AM EDT First off, I'm not a MIB expert, but if you look at the mib files in that package, the three that have any reference to fans are; 10892, rac_host, and DcAsfSrv. Of those, it looks like the 10892 and rac_host are the relevant ones. 10892 has references to fan rpms, and rac_host looks like it references fan health status in the CMC. No idea how you use or compile them for your systems management package use.
