Power consumption 5.4
May 1 2008, 1:20 AM EDT
Hi Guys,

I am a bit confused as to what systems support the power consumption monitoring now available in 5.4. Is there a "document for dummies' that clearly shows which model servers (assuming and bios/drivers are upto date) are supported? looking through the dell documentation made my brain die.... : ) Our server fleet consists on 750, 850, 1750, 1850, 2650, 2850, 2950, 6500 and 6850 servers... and around 80ish VMs running on ESX.

When I setup and run the power consumption monitoring, all my servers display as the Circle/question mark icon (un-instrumented system)... :(

Also, I enabled the disk space monitoring which immediately highlighted an issue with 2 of our servers…(now resolved) nice one! : )

Thanks,
Stuart.

Hey Stuart, how you been ?

Yeah, this was the same question I had and posed to the engineers last week. They sent me a presentation with the details, and I went ahead and created a page that explains -- http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/Dell%20Servers%20capable%20of%20Power%20Monitoring

The power monitoring has to talk to the supplies using the PMBus specification. Unfortunately all your older servers won't have it in the power supplies (un-instrumented).

Glad to hear you at least addressed one problem (most likely an *.MP3 problem, right :-)

Hiya Scott,

I was wondering if Dell had replacement power supplies available for older servers (2650, 2850, 2950). Or does the actual server also need to have the functionality built-in?? We have about 80 of these servers... and will continue to use them for at least 12 months...

Thanks,
Stuart.

It's not just the power supplies. It has to be coded into the system BIOS, and the motherboard has to have the I2C bus to carry the signal. So definitely not the 2650 or 2850. Do you find this valuable?
