Hi
I need to upgrade our MD3000i from firmware 06.70.17.60 to 07.xx to fix a couple of bugs and generally get us up to date. Have any of you been through this process and do I (somehow) need to make sure I have a backup of the entire SAN before I do it? I am at a loss as to how I'm supposed to take down the 20 VM's on the SAN (VMware ESX environment) and backup over 9Tb of data!
Appreciate any help you can offer me with this!
Many thanks Toby

I can't get the boot order to change with CCTK on both the Optiplex 760 & 780. I run the utility with an INI file containing bootorder=+hdd,+embnic,+usbdev,+cdrom,-floppy. According to the output, the boot order is set correctly (also tried the command line). However, when I look in the BIOS, the boot sequence has not been changed and on boot it uses the sequence shown in the BIOS, not what CCTK says. Am I missing something? It works on a Latitude E6400 I tried. I'm using CCTK 1.1 (latest version)

Using the DELL Extensions for SCCM i try to import some dell driverpacks. The packs for (Optiplex) 360, 380, 760, 780, 960, 980, E5500 (Latitude), E6400 (latitude), E6500 (Latitude) work fine. But the Exx10-Releases do not. Eg the E6410 (Latitude) fails on distribution with this error:

While benchmarks are great at seeing what systems run benchmarks well, they tend to almost never reflect reality. This has been true for as long as I have been involved in computing. Memory bandwidth has become extremely critical in multi-core architectures, and I agree with the conclusion that it will only scale in a limited manner, more cores will not equate to better real-world performance due to bandwidth constraints. Of course the 800 pound gorilla in the room is software limitations, but I will leave that to others to comment on.

When scanning the ftp.dell.com repository the latest updates are from 3 june 2010 ? But on support.dell.com there are already updates from july 2010 (36 updates for the past 30 days for the R710 (like OpenManage 6.3 / bios)
So while it sounds nice to have a tool to get the latest updates, you still have to go to support.dell.com to get more updates...

The RM team is still working to get RM to use the same catalog the support.dell.com uses. Currently a catalog.xml file is created from point in time of support.dell.com and then tested. So at times it can be few weeks off. RM reads off that catalog.xml.gz file from here - ftp://ftp.dell.com/catalog/ - current date on it is 7/27 so anything from 7/28 and 7/29 won't exist in there.

Creating ISO update media not working, Strange findings

I am having the same problem as anders post. I have tried 3-5 different models of PowerEdge servers and all of them have 4-8GB of memory so the 12GB max is not my problem. It hangs at "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel" It just hangs here indefinitely. I have created individual bundles based on model type, ie. 1950,2950 and stripped out everything I don't need to make it sleaker but to no avail. Now here is where is gets strange. If I manually update the BIOS first to the latest, 2.6.1 for the 9 series, then the ISO update boots just fine but hangs at the end with "Exit status of the script is 1" and at this point I cannot get it to reboot, alt-ctrl-delete doesn't even work. I am forced to manually power off the server. Upon powering back on I notice nothing actually updated, the bmc, drack, perc, etc are all at their old fimrware levels. Anybody have any fixes on how to create bootable media that works? I am updating large amounts of servers that are in a Non OS environment. I want to update these from the post screen before an OS is installed. I would also be willing to boot using PXE into a Windows PE environment if that's and option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dell Server MP v4.0 servers gets "Unmanaged"

Hello!
I have quite serious problems with the Dell Management pack 4.0 in our SCOM 2007 R2 environment. We are using both the Scalable (4.0.0.114) and the Detailed (4.0.0.116) MP´s. For no obvious reason many servers ends up in the "Dell Unmanaged Windows Server"-group. All of them have the minimum supported version or later of OMSA. Of about 100 servers 80 gets managed and the rest gets not. On the unmanaged servers you can see either of the following two message: 1. "Unable to connect to the Dell Namespace. Install a supported version of OpenManage Server Administrator (v5.3 or later)" 2. "Please install/re-install a supported version of OpenManage Server Administrator (v5.3 or later)"
What can be done to correct this?
It is important that we get hardware alerts from these systems, especially storage.
Sincerely Peter Nilsson

To help understand the environment better -- the version of SCOM, the Dell MP's used, the OM versions and the hardware/OS used, my recommendation is to open a trouble ticket with the Dell support queue in your respective area. They will give this the right attention and capture the environment to help root cause the issue.
More details are available on the supported platforms, Operating Systems, OpenManage, SCOM version etc, in the products User Guide posted here -- http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/smconect/msscom/40/en/index.htm

Hello, this is my first post to the Dell Tech Center, and looking for some advice.
I'm trying to understand how internal ports work on blade switches (M6220 in particular), and having a hard time getting my head round this. I've read the Dell documentation about FlexIO and so on, and also to the M6220 documentation, but still struggling! Each blade switch from what i read has 16 internal ports.
Some questions i have :
- How are these ports used? - Is each switch allocated to a blade? Or are they viewed as a 'virtual pool' of switches? - How could all these internal ports be used? Does each blade server have a number of 'virtual NICs' that can be mapped to each internal port? - Can i use these internal ports to allow teaming? - If i'm running ESX, can i allocate internal ports to each virtual machine? - Does this mean that if i have virtual machines running on the same network and within the same blade enclosure that the network traffic between the virtual machines will be much faster? - With these switches, is it recommended to connect a SAN directly to the external ports, or through another rack mounted switch which then goes into the external ports on the blade switch?
Any help would greatly be appreciated!
cheers,
Tim
