Hey folks,
We’d like your input! Our Storage Interoperability Lab Team is looking at updating this document: “Instructions to Perform Boot from iSCSI for Dell Storage Arrays” http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/BFi/
Given the numerous possibilities for testing the various initiators, arrays, and operating systems -- we’d like to hear your real world datacenter management perspectives on this. What configurations do you think we should look at first?
Thanks in advance for your comments! Best post or two could earn a DellTechCenter.com t-shirt.

RE: iSCSI boot doc refresh team looking for your input

I have the same experience as pattonme, with Windows HBA mode disabled, I see the LUNs available without manually loading any drivers when I test with Windows 7 (the iso that I had handy.)
So, with the prominent Microsoft procedure well documented in that whitepaper, are there now plans to get a similar document written up for Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.3/Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2?
I thought that having the Windows doc would be enough breadcrumbs to get me there but I'm not having the luck that I expected trying to install directly to the LUN (getting the Yast installer to see the LUN during the install.)

So, anyone here got experience on that part? Doing BIOS upgrades from the SCUP to 3000+ clients in different shapes? We are implementing SCUP now and I reallty want to upgrade BIOS and its settings a.s.a.p to latest and greatest in prep for Win7. However, Upgrading BIOS - well - It get's MY alarm bells ringing :-) and 3000 BIOS upgrades later, we COULD be left with A HUGE pile of junk :)

dave787 - I talked with the owner of the Dell SCUP catalog yesterday, and confirmed that what you're seeing is 'by design' - we hashed it out a bit yesterday, and I think we agree that's not a desired state - we (Dell catalog) should be doing is expiring the old update, but leaving them in the catalog for an extended period of time - maye 6 months or a year from when it's expired? we need to remove them eventually, because if not, it would cause significant bloat to the catalog.
I'm not sure of the time frame to change this feature - I'm sure it will be a few months, but no firm timeline at this point - I will try to remember to update this thread when the catalog has been modified to keep 'expired' updates.
Thanks for your feedback, and helping to improve the product.

i have a small problem: we need to attach a TL2000 with a SAS LTO4 drive to a PE2850, now since the SAS5E is PCI-E and the 2850 has only PCI-X slots i got an LSI 3801 PCI-X SAS card, problem is that the cable must be SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 and not the regular SFF-8470 to SFF-8088. anyone has any idea about the compatibility or if this combination would work or not? thanks in advance...

Hi
Been working with this for a long time and still haven't figured out why I can't log in web of PowerConnect 5448. I am maintaining 11 DELL switches and I believe all of those are manageable (please correct me if I'm wrong).
4 Units - 5448 2 Units - 6224 5 Units - 5242
When I try to login, this is the page error
Access was denied due to one of the following reasons:
1) There are too many users logged in
or
2) The specified user name and/or password is incorrect
or
3) The specified user has not been granted web administration privileges
Please, I need help...I will change the IP of those switches because they interfere in our network. I believe all of these switches are configured in DHCP and eaten our occupied Local IP addresses.
Oh, and one more thing... Do I have to access all my switches in console switch? I don't have a console switch, so, Is there a way that I can login in web console of Switch Administrator?
And When I connect to telnet, this is the error:
Cannot authenticate user due to: bad/missing configuration, inaccessible server, user low privileges. Please reconfigure or use Password Recovery.
Please help
Thank you

Ok, I resolved the issue by myself. So, I think I will note down here what I did. It maybe helpful to others.
1. I connect the RS232 cross cable from the switch to server com1 port 2. Use hyperterminal as your console 3. boot the switch and configure the SNMP procedure. 4. Login web console management
That's it....

Have you actually tested the performance with round robin and jumbo frames enabled. I have been struggling all week with jumbo frames and round robin. While jumbo frames are enabled with round robin one network card will show great utilization but when it switches load to the other card you see very poor performance. If you disable the network card with poor performance the other one jumps up to expected throughput.
This is not a hardware related issue, I'm assuming others with the md3000i would see the same if they did some performance testing.
Meanwhile if you disable jumbo frames and use round robin it works just fine. On a side note to that VMWare will only support the use of MRU, which from all of my tests still gives better performance the round robin.

... Then I found that is possible on the fly place offline controllers of MD3000i (one at a time of course), and it is even possible without interruption of service when using only multipath drivers on clients. So I put first controller offline, and after few minutes back online, then the same with second. And speed of all ports got back to usable rates.
After that I switched all policies from RR to MRU, and maybe in feature when I will be running more VMs, I will use Fixed Path and specify different preferred ports for specific LUNs for soft of some manual load balancing.
My personal guess is that by using RR controllers at MD3000i got somewhat confused, and putting offline/online got their state reset to normal. I consider it a bug, but I don't feel I have power to make DELL fix it. Maybe they even know it very well, and this is reason why only MRU is supported by DELL/VMware as was stated in this discussion.

My disclaimer.....I inherited this infrastructure.<grin>
I want to enable Jumbo Frame.
I know how to Config jumbo frames on the m6220, EQL and The Power connect 5424(SAN ISCSI SWITCH)
It looks like on the M6220 in my chassis that they are NOT doing a LAP\ ether channel to the Power connect 5424 on the external switch ports connections on the M6220.
SHOULD I do a LAP from the M6220 to the 5424 or leave it with (4) 1 GB connections? I say LAP? Once I enable Jumbo Frames I need to set my ESX 4 host to accept Jumbo frames and any other servers that connect using the ISCSI NIC's to Jumbo Frames.
Just need some confirmation and any other words of wisdom.

I assume you are wondering about the number of disks in your RAID 5 sets? If thats the case, then yes it will help. The more drives the better. If you are wondering about any extra processing power being added by the MD1000's, then 'No'. That will not make any difference.

We have a Dell Powervault 132T that is fiber connected to our backup server, we are currently in the process of building and testing a newer backup server. We want to run these two servers in parallel during our testing period so I have been asked to connect the Powervault to both servers simultaneously so that we can run backups from either server. The question I have is this configuration possible to do with the Powervault? Our intention is to have the backup software enabled on only one server at a time, switching between the two during our testing. Will I run into problems with this?
