Believe it or not, I don't use Redhat, Fedora or Centos! RPM based distros are not suitable for every server out there. Yes this is an unsupported setup ...
Openmanage in RPM format is a pain to install. Please consider distributing some unsupported plain tarballs of Openmanage. Better yet, please consider open-sourcing and distributing source tarballs of Openmanage.

on linux it would be nice if omconfig and omreport (etc.) took getopt style parameters, especially the help side; typing -\? to avoid shell escapes is tiresome. ;-) --help or -h would be nice

Hi Guys,
Right now, I can create a deployment job and either schedule it, or run it immediately... unfortunately, some jobs fail for whatever reason (authentication issue s or whatnot). It would be great if we could carry out a deployment simulation which will go through as many steps as possible without actually applying the update/rebooting etc.... we could then run the a pre deployment simulation first, and then feel confident that the task scheduled for 3am will work as expected. Thanks, Stuart.

I am really missing the "connect video" functionality of DRAC-III with the newer models.
It did work just within usual telnet or ssh connections, without any "compatible" browser or software and without the huge latencies introduced with the newer replacements. OK, it could present only a text console, but that would be sufficient for emergency actions over f.e. DSL lines.

Hi Guys,
I am a bit confused as to what systems support the power consumption monitoring now available in 5.4. Is there a "document for dummies' that clearly shows which model servers (assuming and bios/drivers are upto date) are supported? looking through the dell documentation made my brain die.... : ) Our server fleet consists on 750, 850, 1750, 1850, 2650, 2850, 2950, 6500 and 6850 servers... and around 80ish VMs running on ESX. When I setup and run the power consumption monitoring, all my servers display as the Circle/question mark icon (un-instrumented system)... :( Also, I enabled the disk space monitoring which immediately highlighted an issue with 2 of our servers…(now resolved) nice one! : ) Thanks, Stuart.

Hi Guys,
I would like to use OpenManage as my central snmp trap server for my network devices (all cisco). I can get the snmp community strings working fine (I can click on Device Details in OM and see all the switch ports) but I would to do more.... like getting alll th switches to show under a group (instead on Unknown)... I have had a look on the Dell forums but there is no information of note... Am i barking up the wrong tree here? or is is posible to use OM in this way? Thanks heaps, Stuart.

I am sure you are well aware of the power restrictions in the datacentres of today. We are co-locating, as most medium business are, in a datacentre. We have 21 racks each of which are limited to 2KW. With the price of electricity increasing, we recently finished a 2 year contract during this time the cost of the racks increased from £4,500pa to £10,000pa, it is becoming increasinly important to insure that we are getting the best use out of our racks. We occasionally measure the power usage in our racks and most of the time we have underestimated the power and could probably save a rack, if we could organise the servers with the correct power usage.
We were concidering installing power metering into our racks so that we could monitor the racks in real time. So the inclusion of power metering into the PowerEdge servers is a great plus for us. This got me thinking about ITA and whether it could do a job for us. Could ITA have a similar display to the Dell Datacentre Capacity Planner where you could locate your servers in the correct racks and correct “U”. While the DDCP does a pretty good job in reality it seems to over estimate (for obvious reasons) the power usage. My “vision” here would allow for the following:- • Get better estimates of mixing the measured servers with DDCP estimates for older servers, over-ride DDCP estimates with a “similar” model real measurements • Get real power usage, max power usage & time of max of a rack of servers • In ITA move a Server to a new rack to test its power usage before physically moving it. This will test that it doesn’t over power the rack. • Trend and alert on rack power usage. • You could even get really clever and create virtual racks with shortcuts to real servers to test layout before moving servers around.

My company supports many clients remotely. So far we use Kaseya for server management and remote access. I've been put in charge of updating bios and firmware on those remote servers in different domains across our client base.
1. For example, Kaseya agents push information to the server. Does OMSA push info to ITA once the server has been "discovered"? Or does ITA pull information from OMSA client. 2. Is it possible to use ITA to manage those remote servers? Private IP to Private IP without extensive firewall configuration - port forwarding and such. Thanks for your time. --Samat Valiev

The "installing Dell Openmanage Software in a VMware ESX Server Software Environment" and the install is pretty good.
I would like to see a small change for those of us that don't read the document cover to cover :-) In section 6.1 the first main bullet is to increase the service console memory by 128mb for OM 4.5 on ESX 2.5.x This should really be added to each section of Installing Dell OpenManage n.n on ESX n.n.x section. You may want to even make it bold. Since we were install OM 5.x on 3.x, we didn't read installing 4.x on 2.5.x

I have the exact hardware and network setup as page 3 in this link:
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/solutions/md3000i_esx_deploy_guide.pdf On the MD3000i I have set up the controllers like this: controller 0, port 0 - 192.168.130.101 controller 0, port 1 - 192.168.131.101 controller 1, port 0 - 192.168.130.102 controller 1, port 1 - 192.168.131.102 On the ESX Servers, each server has an IP pool with an address in the 192.168.130, and 192.168.131 ranges. Everything is working fine. A college has suggested that why have the separate ranges? To which I answered "I don't know". Is it best practice to keep 2 IP ranges or is that just adding complexity to the network setup? Could I set up my controllers to be something like: controller 0, port 0 - 192.168.130.101 controller 0, port 1 - 192.168.130.102 controller 1, port 0 - 192.168.130.103 controller 1, port 1 - 192.168.130.104 And the ESX servers to have just 192.168.130.* IP addresses. Which config would you suggest and why?

Hi Guys,
Being able to monitor disk space is great; it highlighted a number of servers with space issues within 20mins of monitoring being enabled in our environment. The ability to view the current day’s history and create a graph is exactly what we require... Would it be possible to enable a "date range" option so that we can more easily view the disk space trends over a longer period?

Hi Guys,
If we wish to carry out a firmware/driver update, we go to the software repository and select the driver... we then choose the compliance tab and either use a saved query or selected group then click compare, select the appropriate server then click update. This is a bit convoluted... It would be great if we could do it in either of the following ways... Right click the server in the Devices tree, select a software update option and proceed... Right click the server in the Software updates tree, select a software update option and proceed...

I was wondering if there was a way to gain access to (or create maybe??) a forum which customers can post suggestions on what improvments/added features we would like to see in OpenManage? it would need to be a forum which is accessed by the OpenManage development team... What do you reckon??? Thanks, Stuart.

Will dell release any storage solution within blade ?
After study the whitepaper and compared to HP c-class system. Dell have no passive connection between blade and it only possible with I/O modules. But with some kind of SAS fabric module, it even can build whole storage solution using this blade enclosure. Consider storage blade using double-width, we got 2 x4 SAS connection to *each* I/O module act as in/out (or 4 x4 SAS but need 2 I/O module for redundancy). That fabric connect each half-height slot 1-in, 2-out, 3-in, 4-out, 5-in 6-out. Now it possible to get rid of MDx000 enclosure ;-) Does dell working on these ideas ?

Tagamet, we got an answer back from engineering. The system has to "think" that it only had one power supply to begin with. So are you ready for a little downtime ?
You'll have to completely remove power from the system and power it up with only a single power supply inserted. Then there is no redundancy to "lose". I just tested this on one of our 1850's in the lab. I had removed the 2nd supply, got the red-x and amber light on front of the server. I completely shut it down and removed the power cords, pulled out the 2nd power supply and turned it back on. Now it only has blue light and no errors. If you re-insert the 2nd power supply (without power cord) - it will go into error state and you would have to repeat process all over to return to original state. I think better solution is to do the Y-cables, now that you know it is not a doubling in power, only ~17%. Even though this won't protect you from a power leg failure, you can at least sustain a power supply failure. And you won't have to deal with this workaround, and you could perform the Y-cable upgrade without taking the machines down. What's your userid on the wiki ? Couldn't find you, and this is the only logical place I could think to contact you.
