One of the most important steps in planning for an iSCSI SAN is properly determining the size of the SAN solution required then sizing the network infrastructure appropriately to allow for current AND future growth. I am currently working a whitepaper that will be released soon that looks at Layer 2 switches such as the PowerConnect 54xx Series and helps in determining if a layer 2 network solution (and the PC54xx in particular) can handle a SAN of the size you are looking at.
How many ports does it take to actually implement an EqualLogic SAN? Working with the Dell EqualLogic engineering team in Nashua and with the PowerConnect team here in Round Rock, I came up with a quick formula to determine the number of ports you need: (([#Arrays]x 6) + ([# hosts]x 2) + ([#Active PSArray Ports] x 2)) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 For the details you will have to wait for the full paper, but thought you might find this of use.

I got this working, but I did have to change the command:
performanceStats file=\"c"\\md3000iPerfStats.csv\";" to read: performanceStats file=\"c":\md3000iPerfStats.csv\";" ----> (Notice the ":" after the c" instead of the extra "\") Also, just for others that might run this... If you run the 250 iterations as show in the above command, it may take a while... I changed it to 20 just to make sure it was doing something... Finally I got the "completed successfully" message after about 4 - 5 minutes... Thanks again Scott for the info... --Sean

Hey guys,
On our rev III 9th gen servers we now have an option for the onboard NICs to be "iSCSI enabled". Can someone reply with 1) what this is, an 2) what this is not? It seems to be an alternative to an iSCSI HBA. But I'm getting mixed info on exactly what functionality this adds to the onboard NICS :-( --Brian

| todd_muirhead | Performance Monitoring of MD3000i from Linux | 6 | Jul 15 2008, 12:16 PM EDT by todd_muirhead | |||

During the chat Kristoffer had a couple of questions around the MD3000i. One of which was how do you monitor the performance from a Linux system? I checked with a good Linux friend of mine and he recommends the sysstat package (or RPM) which includes iostat.
Anybody else have a recommendation?

Hi Dave,
Read a lot of your articles recently and really enjoyed them. I am really interested in the MD3000i storage array device for a possible setup of Exchange 2007 in the future. I like the expansion that it offers (just like in your article....two exchange 2007 servers in CCR setup...database, web etc.). My goal right now is to do the underlying research so I can present this in the near future. What is especially helpful is the price tag on these. Makes it easier selling point and is a lot cheaper than say, using our NetAPP and the peformance is pretty comparable. The Irish Guy
