| Ralf_S | MD3000i - limitations on LUN size? | 3 | Wednesday, 11:38 AM EST by scott_hanson | |||

Hi,
we just purchased a MD3000i with 15 x 300 GB SAS 15k HDDs and a MD1000 with 6 x 1 TB SATA HDDs as a central storage device for two redundant VMWare ESX servers (PE2950). When trying to create a LUN larger than 2 TB (we are planning to use the 15 x 300 GB disks in RAID5 + hot spare = 4.2 TB) we were not successful. When sizing the disk array we have been told by the Dell pre-sales consultant that a capacity of 4.2 TB would be feasable and now there seem to be some limitations... Is there anybody who could tell us if there's really a size limitation and if yes, is there probably a workaround?

Hello,
2 NICs per Server. 2 Switches Each switch is connected to each controller of the MD3000i. We are experiencing a 3 minutes delay during a failover if we unplug a cable or disable a network interface. I have seen that during for the MD3000i, the value for the key LinkdownTime is set to 144s which is higher than many other iSCSI storage bay. I have two questions: Is the delay we are experiencing is caused by this registry key ? Why is this value set to 144s ? thank you Laurenzo |

We have an MD3Ki with 450GB 15K RPM SAS drives. Using what we believe to be correctly configured MPIO on an isolated gigabit Cisco switch, we are only seeing about 78MB/s transfer rates. Reviews of the MD3Ki that I have seen have indicated closer to 120MB/s, and generally mention running the raid controllers in "active / active" mode. I can't seem to find any documentation on this mode. Does anybody have suggestions?
Our iSCSI client is a Dell 1850, 8GB RAM, dual proc, win 2K3 64-bit, Intel 4-port gigabit card, and we are using "HD Tach" for testing. thanks, dave.

Hey guys,
When configuring R10 via MDSM there is no "RAID 10" option. Can a customer just pick R1 and apply it to 4 or more drives? --Brian

We have an MD3000i with SAS and SATA drives. I want to backup the volumes on the SAS drives to the SATA drives.
Is a Snapshot good enough for a backup? i.e. If the SAS raid array failed, would I be able to recover all the data from the last snapshot on the SATA drives or do I have to do a disk copy to do that? What is the difference between a Snapshot and Virtual Disk Copy? Thanks, Greg

we are getting an MD3000i to use as an iSCSI SAN (vmware, windows, linux, netware...) We spec'd it to have SAS drives for live data and SATA drives for snapshot backups. We need to have off-site backups of the SAN, but I'm not sure how to proceed and best utilize the snapshot features to offload to tape. Should I be looking for another server to hang a tape library onto to make backups of the snapshots - I'm new to using a SAN so I'm a bit lost/confused.
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

I am interested in using the MD3000i to build a RHEL 5 Xen virtual server farm. Will the MD3000i work with RHEL Cluster Suite ?

Seeing issues with an MD3000i (upgraded to the latest firmware) where trying to use CHAP in ESX causes the Storage Controller ESX is attempting to connect to, to reset continuously. I've tried reducing the IQN name to less thatn 30 chars to no avail.
Got a support call open with Dell but I'm hitting issues getting past Level1/2 at the moment Anyone know of a workaroung? |

Hello, we are considering the MD3000i (HA version) for our initial SAN. The system will be running connected to a host that will have 2-3 virtual servers running our hosted application. The SAN will be responsible for storing the VM images, database content and document repository.
I would like to know if you can mix and match two different drive types SAS and SATA on one platform (similar to EMC). I was thinking of using smaller, high speed drives in one LUN for the database and VM images, and higher capacity 1TB SATA drives for the document repository. Can anyone give me some basic advice and throughput guidance/specs related to the scenarios listed above? Should we just use high speed drives and avoid SATA? OR, can you mix and match? Or, could we purchase a second MD1000 unit and fill it with 1TB SATA drives (having the MD3000i using SAS)? Thanks! M.

The 3000i was going to be certified for VMWare this month. Is this goinfg to actually happen?
Is EMC playing hard to play on getting Dells' hardware ready for VMWare?
