Linux HintsThis is a featured page

During your Linux project you will typically need an answer for practical questions like "How do I copy a file between Windows and Linux computers?" or "How can I run a graphical program on the Linux box from my Windows box?". This article aims to make you comfortable with the topic.

Copy files between Windows and Linux

To copy files from your Windows box to a Linux box and the other way round you can use the software winscp for free.

Run graphical programs

If you work on a Windows box and want to run graphical programs remotely on a Linux box you can use the software xlaunch from the xming package for free. Just start xlaunch, enter username, password and IP of the Linux machine and select "startkde || xterm" as program to start. This will try to start kde and if this is not possible, start an xterm at least.

Use a Remote Access Card

To use the Dell Remote Access Card (DRAC) with special blades, you will have to set "Mouse Mode" to "Linux". To do this:
  • Open the DRAC's web front-end in a browser
  • Choose System -> Console Media -> Configuration -> Mouse Mouse
  • Select "Linux"
As a result, mouse cursor and mouse clicks will be synchroneous between the "virtual" and the "physical" mouse.
