What is the Dell Server Deployment Pack?

The Dell Server Deployment Pack is a plug-in that integrates directly into the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (ConfigMgr) console. It enables you to install Dell servers, configure its hardware, and eliminates the need for command-line tools and scripts normally used in the DTK. To configure and deploy your Dell systems, you need to select configuration options and commands on the GUI using drop-down lists and check boxes. This makes your system deployment an easy, automated task.

What's new in 1.2:

  • Support for Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager(ConfigMgr) 2007 R2 and SP2 releases.
  • Support for installing Dell Server Deployment Pack on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Support for deploying Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Support for importing of Deployment ToolKit (DTK) using the Deployment ToolKit Configuration Wizard.
  • Support for deploying operating systems on systems that ConfigMgr treats as unknown.
  • Support for importing Dell drivers from the ConfigMgr Admin Console.
  • Support for deployment using x64 boot images (DTK with 64-bit support is required).
  • Consolidated launch points to various wizards, to perform a typical server deployment.
  • Enhanced support for up to sixteen global and dedicated RAID hot spares.

Overview of Dell Server Deployment Pack Features

Using the ConfigMgr Task Sequence Editor, you can do the following with the Dell Deployment Pack:

  • Configure your system's Baseboard Management Controller (BMC), Dell Remote Access Controller (DRAC), Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID), and BIOS. You can configure BIOS and RAID using .ini files. You can configure your system settings using the GUI or command-line interface (CLI) options. You can also configure RAID using the Array Builder wizard.
  • Create a Dell-specific boot image that will be used in the OS deployment.
  • Create and apply driver installation packages for specific Dell systems.

DWigginsPlanet DDP 1.2 - OEM Deployment Action error - "HAPI Driver Load Error." 1 Jun 14 2010, 7:14 PM EDT by DWigginsPlanet
Thread started: Jun 14 2010, 7:04 PM EDT  Watch
I've installed DDP 1.2 on my SCCM SP2 server.

I've imported the Custom Reboot Script and Deployment Toolkit Integration packages and sent them around to all my distribution points.

I've run the "Create Dell Server Boot Image" wizard twice - once each for x86 and amd64 architectures. When I ran the wizard, I pointed it at existing images that I've been using in configmgr - ones that have appropriately configured hosts files and some additional scripts that I need to have available to my task sequences.

I've built a winPE bootable CD w/ the DTK tools on it so that I could boot a machine in a standalone DTK environment and make sure my syntax is correct.

Now i'm trying to put it all together and let SCCM/DDP do some machine pre-configuration before installing an OS. I'm running against a bare-metal box. My provisioning target is an R210.

My task sequence is set to use the 32 bit image that the DDP boot image wizard created. The first step int he task seq works fine - it connects back to the MP and sets "RebootStep" variable on the machine record for the box that I'm running on. Next up, it's time to configure some BIOS settings - my TS step says that I'm going to run the Set BIOS Config command line, and i'm using an argument of "--embsataraid=ata --noraidprompt" - I've already sanity checked this syntax, so I know it to be good. The step fails with an error code of 0x00000090.

The smsts.log has this to say (lots of stuff left out, i'm transcribing from a KVM - no copy/paste) :

Starting execution of OEM Deployment Action
SCRIPT VERSION: DSDP 1.2 - 02/11/10

{deletia}

ExecuteTask: Step Name : Load Dell HAPI drivers
ExecuteTask: Executable : hapint.exe

{deletia}

Raymond_B Dell Deployment Package 1.2 "Set RebootStep Variable" problems 9 Apr 12 2010, 2:17 AM EDT by sumanthbr

I see a discussion about this dating back to 2009, I was hoping this was resolved in DDP 1.2.

This is on a new install of SCCM 2007 SP2 R2 on Windows 2008.

I've setup a basic Bare Metal Server Deployment task to deploy Windows 2008 std x64 to a new R610. I've advertised it to the All Unknown Computers collection. The TS is failing on the Set RebootStep portion after the 1st reboot (Task Sequence: xxxx has failed with error code (0x00000001). Looking at the smsts.log the error is "Failed to run the last action: Set RebootStep Variable. Execution has been aborted"
