erson One thing that bothers me is recommended minimum hardware configuration of two physical processors. Do you actually mean two CPUs as in a dual-socket server/workstation or do you mean two cores?

robcox_ You really need two physical processors if you can. The product will install on a single processor with dual core, but sometimes there are “anomalies” (in my experience) in the install. The install is very DB intensive and two processors are just better

erson So, a single quad-core Xeon is worse than two single cores?

robcox_ Single-processor dual core takes a lot longer to install also

DELL-ScottH Rob, can you cover some of the things that will make the console GUI run faster? This seems to be a very common question from the field

robcox_ Erson, your quad-core question is hard to answer. Want to run some tests for me and let me know :)

erson When benchmarked, a single quad-core will totally kill two single core or older dual core. So I find it hard to believe that Dell Management Console will actually run better on the latter option than the first

erson When I get my new equipment I for sure will get some equipment to test Dell Management Console

robcox_ Yeah, that may be the case. Most of the folks using a single processor (in testing) had dual cores, so there was a big difference in our experience. Did your quad-core (single processor) install go okay?

erson My current install is on two single-core (with HT) 2.4 GHz Xeons. Everything went fine

robcox_ On to GUI performance. So the big thing to pay attention to here is the pre-requisite check during the install. It's a warning check and it talks about Net certification checking

robcox_ There should be a link that offers to resolve it for you. You need to be sure and do this. It makes a big impact on UI performance of the console

DELL-ScottH Define "big,” please

robcox_ See FAQ section 17 for more discussion. You can check some machine.config settings to see if it is set okay

robcox_ Well, so the portal page could take 60 seconds to load without it, or 10 seconds with it properly set. This is noticed in the environment when you are not on the Internet, that is, most lab networks

DELL-ScottH That's a pretty big difference

robcox_ Yeah, Microsoft does certification checking for .Net applications. Most folks who run a typical .Net application may be on the Internet at their desk/cube/office. So it becomes an issue in a lab setup

DELL-ScottH What about prerequisites? What should customers do first to help with an easier installation?

robcox_ So the readme and FAQ have some good basic stuff. .Net 3.5 is set up, etc. The big thing is to be sure you have a user account with full local administrator authority

robcox_ Nadine, other stuff?

erson Be sure you have this already on your server: OS, Windows 2003 Server *32 bit* (not Web, Core, Storage editions); SQL Server Express database (on the Dell Management Console media); .Net 3.5 (on the Dell Management Console media); IIS; Internet Explorer 7.0

robcox_ Yeah :)

erson All that suggests RAM on large environments would be of much use with a 32-bit OS

DELL-ScottH *local* admin.... There were issues with domain admin, correct?

nadine Increase the memory in your SQL setup

erson PAE is available, but that isn't very good speedwise

erson I will for sure go with the DB on a separate DB server when I put up the production installation of Dell Management Console

robcox_ Yeah, so users may have privileges in one domain, but not full local authority on the box they are installing to. Need permissions to restart services on the box, etc.

nadine On non-Internet machines. That you sometimes see in the systems log

robcox_ Yeah, on Nadine’s crypt32 errors, check the FAQ. I just added that not too long ago

erson Is a full version of SQL Server actually faster than the Express version as long as you don't touch the hardware limits of the Express version?

robcox_ You know, I think if you look at the Microsoft Web site on SQL Express they discuss the limitations. I think they may be limited to 1 GB RAM and/or one processor. But they make it pretty clear

erson Regarding the license, why is that needed when the product is free?

nadine Okay, you need SQL Management tool, but go to the database, right-click properties, choose memory, and increase "maximum server memory"

erson Robcox, yeah, Express is limited to 1 CPU (although, could be bad ass quad-core Xeon processor 5500 series) and 1 GB of RAM (but you need a 32-bit version of Windows 2003) anyway

robcox_ Okay, so Discovery...any friends of mine lurking on the chat can jump in. First, you want to be sure the boxes you are trying to discover have OMSA on them. SNMP needs to be configured on the managed node that you are trying to discover. The SNMP service properties (Security tab) should be set to accept packets from any host or your named Dell Management Console host. This is the same as if you are setting it up for IT Assistant discovery

Grimsrud Hi, I have trouble getting Web Services for Management (WS-Management) to work with ESX 3.5 U4; when I try to change WS-Management to use port 80 with VMware Virtual Infrastructure Remote Command-Line Interface (RCLI), I get some errors in the upload of proxy.xml

robcox_ If your boxes can be discovered by IT Assistant, they should be good to go for Dell Management Console discovery.

Greg_-_ThinkCash The part I use a lot of on IT Assistant is the software update section. Makes for easy firmware updating. How will this change?

robcox_ That is in the Dell Management Console product. There is a patch portal page off the home menu. Very similar to IT Assistant since it uses DUPs (Dell Update Packages)

robcox_ Yeah, deploy OMSA to the box, and then you can run (rerun) the discovery task. You need to do this so they can be classified as "Dell computers"

robcox_ Today, you can push the Altiris agent to an HP box using the free Dell Management Console product. And you can import an HP MIB using the free MIB import feature in Dell Management Console. But, if you want more extensive inventory and monitoring, you may need to purchase SMS, the Symantec upsell. There is an SMS demo on the DVD, or you can visit the Symantec Web site for more information

robcox_ That's the plan :) One other tip: After you have run discovery and gotten your systems discovered and classified, go to the device tree in Manage > All Devices to review your devices. Then, you can go to the Inventory wizard to run that and collect hardware inventory on your devices. Then...

erson Does Dell Management Console support Vpro in any way or form?

robcox_ You can go back to the device tree...double-click to bring up Resource Manager, and bring up Summaries | Hardware Summary to get the hardware inventory for the device

robcox_ Grimsrud: standard SNMP, HTTP/HTTPS, and a few others. We are working on a white paper for that. If you dig in support.dell.com, you can find the OpenManage white paper for this. We are pretty similar to what IT Assistant has in there

robcox_ Erson, Dell Management Console is the server product (me). Dell Client Manager is the client product. Both are on the media and you can install them both. They run in the same Notification Server console

robcox_ The integration is not as elegant as I would like. We are working on that. But they will both run in the same console for now

Before it only supported two hard drives and RAID-0/-1 on the blade servers, but for the new 11th-generation update they support four hard drives and RAID-10, -5, -6 as well

DELL-ScottH Hmmm, not on my PowerEdge T610 in the lab; only does -0/-1. Let me double check

erson Support for up to four drives (SAS or SATA) added RAID-5, RAID-10, and RAID-6 support added; hot spare and reversible hot spare support added; new platforms supported include the PowerEdge M610 and PowerEdge M710. I got that from my sales rep today. That was the 11th-generation update of the CERC 6i, but could be that it's only for the PowerEdge M610 and PowerEdge M710

DELL-ScottH Booting my PowerEdge T610 now. I haven't checked support; aren't the manuals up on it yet?

erson Last time I checked the CERC manual wasn't updated

erson To the best of my knowledge you need a special FlexAddress SD card with the allotted MACs/WWN to put in your CMC. And you only need one SD card, even if you have redundant CMCs

erson I have got indications here in Sweden/Denmark that support for Windows 2008 and SQL 2008 (with 64-bit support) will come sooner than that. But the guys in the chat should know better
